Jaisalmer also known as "Golden City", is located on the westernmost frontier of India in the state of Rajasthan.
The city of Jaisalmer is dominated by the Jaisalmer Fort. Unlike most forts in India, the Jaisalmer Fort is a living fort. There are shops, hotels, age old havelis inside the fort area. Jaisalmer Fort was built in 1156 and is the second oldest in the state of Rajasthan.The fort, built by Rawal Jaisal, which crowns the 80m highTrikuta hill, has its outer wall of palaces, houses and temples of soft yellow sandstone. It has narrow winding lanes and four huge gateways, the last one leading to main chowk dominated by the old palace of the Maharwal. Almost one quarter of the town's population resides inside the fort.

A military airstrip has recently been opened to limited civilian flights, with Kingfisher offering flights from Delhi. Jodhpur Airport which lies around 285 km from Jaisalmer and serves domestic flights from destinations such as New Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai. |
